Inaugural Inductee

Paul Higgins Sr.

Paul Higgins Sr., the third generation to guide Mother Parkers, established the Golden Pencil Awards, originally called the “Knights of the Golden Pencil Award” to recognize individuals who contributed to the growth of the food industry. The award was first presented in 1956, and in 1969, Higgins himself was recognized for his industry initiatives. Through four generations of his family, the commitment to customer satisfaction and success has guided every decision at Mother Parkers. The company was established as a wholesale grocery distributor in 1912. Mother Parkers Tea & Coffee celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012 and as part of its centennial celebrations, the company raised $1 million for research into finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, which had afflicted Paul Higgins Sr., who led Mother Parkers through periods of significant challenge and growth. Higgins passed away in 2004 at the age of 91.
